An evening of music in motion
Saturday 22nd November 2025, 7:00pm

Join us for the second concert of our season, an evening that celebrates the drive, energy, and beauty of orchestral music. We open with Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Petite Suite de Concert, a work full of charm, elegance, and playful textures that immediately draws you into its vibrant world. Next, Edward Gregson’s Tuba Concerto offers a rare spotlight moment for the tuba, featuring the artistry of our own Wilfred Driscoll, whose performance brings warmth, virtuosity, and will get your toes tapping!
The program culminates in Brahms’ Symphony No. 3, a masterpiece of lyrical depth, sweeping gestures, and emotional resonance. Momentum is more than a concert—it’s a journey through sound, expression, and the pulse of music itself, inviting you to experience every note, phrase, and resonance along the way.

Wilfred Driscoll

Wilfred began playing the tuba at the age of 11 in the brass bands of Cornwall. It quickly became apparent that he had a natural flair and this lead to him being part of several county ensembles, excelling in many music festivals and qualifying for the finals of Cornwall Young Musician in 1998. Wilfred was a member of the National Youth Brass Band and National Wind Orchestra of Great Britain, holding the principal tuba position in both ensembles.
In 2002 he was accepted at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to study for his BMus, where he was part of the Welsh National Opera & BBC National Orchestra of Wales side by side schemes, as well as performing in several professional engagements with both ensembles. During his four years in Cardiff Wilfred performed and recorded with a number of notable ensembles, including: Wormshead Brass (made up of the best professional brass players in the area), Tredegar Town Band (with which he performed a solo on their album Building with Brass) and the internationally acclaimed: Cory Band. In 2004 he won the chance to take part in the inaugural London Symphony Orchestra’s (LSO) St Luke’s Academy, a week of intensive coaching from the members of the LSO brass section.
Wilfred moved to the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2006 for his PGDip studying with the world renowned tubist Patrick Harrild. While he was there he was selected to perform in many of the top level ensembles, culminating in the Richard Strauss Complete Music for Brass Ensemble album released in 2008, as well as playing in many student based groups including The Brass Collective, (the forerunner to the well-known brass ensemble Septura).
In 2008, Wilfred was selected for the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s Foyles’ Future Firsts scheme and has performed with many professional orchestras in the subsequent years including the Philharmonia, Aurora Orchestra and the LSO. He has trialled for the principal tuba positions for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and made the international shortlist for la Orquesta Filarmónica de Santiago.
His playing career continued with a number of engagements including performing the Vaughan Williams Tuba Concerto with the Corinthian Chamber Orchestra in 2010, he was a member of the famous Locke Brass Consort holding the position of principal tuba which was once held by the inspirational John Fletcher (for whom the Gregson Tuba Concerto was written), recording the album Brilliant Brass in 2017 and performing Tubby The Tuba with this orchestra last season.
Wilfred freelances in and around the London area performing regularly with several top level central London orchestras.
